The back muscles are rigid and stiff. It is impossible to flex, extend or turn the waist. The application of heat usually doesn’t give any relief. Laser acupuncture According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TMC) the Energetic Channels passing through the lower back and hip region are the Bladder, the Governor and the Gall bladder Channels. Pain arises when there is blockage in one or more of these Channels. With a back sprain the blockage is caused by trauma. The TMC expression for this is stagnation of Qi and Blood from sprain. If the attacks are recurrent, an underlying Energetic Kidney deficiency is possibly also present. The TMC syndrome of Retention of Damp-Cold can also cause severe lower back pain. The pain is worse when the weather is cold and damp. It is relieved with the application of heat. Getting out of bed is difficult and light exercise helps.
